Food waste is a worldwide problem. However, it affects each country differently, it all depends on the socioeconomic status they hold. Countries of lower socioeconomic status generate more food waste than countries with a greater income. Various organizations are in charge of regulating food waste all around the world. Yet, once again, these organizations handle the problem differently relying on which country they are working for. We have all witnessed an employee of a five-star restaurant carrying out bags, full of expired food, that go straight to the trash, or the Starbucks barista tossing away the display sandwiches and desserts that are replaced every two days. This†¦show more content†¦Based on the OECD (The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) Environmental Data Compendium, The U.S holds the number one position on food waste, the average American wastes about 760 kilograms of food per year. A recent study from Clear Water Action revealed that the biggest source of litter in The U.S oceans comes from fast food restaurants. The five most notable sources in the country are McDonald s, Burger King, Seven Eleven, Starbucks and Wendy’s. Given all of this information, it can be concluded that even though The U.S. is a first world country that has on its power the highest technologies, stills contributes in big proportions to tremendous issues such as food waste. On the other hand, Mexico, a third world country which is going through a lot of issues at the moment, such as economic stability, corruption, insecurity, etc. Unfortunately is also suffering from this huge global concern. As stated by FAO (The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) every year 10,431,00 tons of food waste is disposed of in Mexico. More than 40% of the national crops are lost or thrown away; this is not only food waste, but also an immense economic loss for the country and its civilians.
